When you sustain a plant-based diet, it may be challenging to find vegan restaurants nearby. Koons Woodbridge Hyundai wants to help you out, so we compiled this list of the top vegan restaurants in the D.C. area. We highlight specialty menu items and which restaurants offer carryout or delivery service, giving you a quick reference of local vegan dining spots.

Vegz

Vegz focuses on creating flavorful and satisfying plant-based dishes in an authentic South Indian style. Chef Swarn Singh is a vegetarian himself, and he’s passionate about making delicious vegetarian and vegan meals. These entrees are so tasty and filling that they will even satisfy meat eaters. The delicious food is reasonably priced, with large entrees from $10 to $14 each.

Start your meal with the delectable crispy Spinach Chat for an appetizer or try a samosa with tasty green dipping sauce. Then enjoy any of the many dosas, which are savory Indian-style lentil-based crepes and have a variety of fillings. The Paneer Dosa, stuffed with grated Indian cottage cheese, is a local favorite. Another delicious dish is the Bhindi Dopiaza, which is a large plate of stir-fried okra served with basmati rice. Other specialties include many additional paneer dishes and the garlic parmesan fries. You may also want to try the fresh vegetable or fruit juice.

You can find Vegz at 2120 18th St. NW in the basement, and it’s open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The restaurant has dine-in services, curbside pickup, and no-contact delivery available.

Elife Restaurant

Everlasting Life Restaurant, or Elife, has been serving delicious vegan soul food in the D.C. area for over 25 years. Their 100% vegan menu contains both cooked entrees and raw foods. Elife’s menu promotes health with soul and features items such as barbecue tofu, drumettes, and macaroni and cheese. Elife is very active in the community and also hosts regular events, such as cooking demos and classes, children’s nights with educational activities, and a monthly shopping bazaar.

The menu features a variety of entrees, side dishes, desserts, fresh-made fruit and vegetable juices, and lattes. They even have cheesecake and soy-free soft serve ice cream to satisfy your sweet tooth. The vegan macaroni and cheese and mock fried chicken are both customer favorites. There is a budget-friendly Sunday brunch featuring tofu scramble, vegan sausage, mock chicken and gravy, and vegetable lasagna. Elife makes mouthwatering pancakes with soy milk, and they are served with authentic maple syrup. The very popular drumettes come in several flavors, including maple curry and Buffalo.

Elife is located at 341 Cedar St. NW and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is closed on Mondays. Elife has dine-in and pickup service available at the Takoma location.

Busboys and Poets

If you’re looking for a vegan restaurant that is also an intellectual and creative outlet, a bookstore, and a community gathering place, Busboys and Poets is the place for you. This restaurant has a unique atmosphere combining art, culture, and politics. It was founded in 2005 by Andy Shallal as a place to feed one’s mind, body, and soul.

There are weekly open mic nights for poetry readings and a monthly open mic night for any type of performance you’d like to give. Comedians, actors, dancers, musicians, magicians, and any other performers are welcome. Busboys and Poets also frequently hosts other creative and artistic events.

While not solely vegan, there are many clearly marked vegan choices on the menu. Start your day with a delicious tofu scramble for breakfast with vegan sausage in it for extra protein. The sweet potato hash is another popular dish. Other delicious meals include Mediterranean pasta with capers and asparagus, falafel wraps with hummus, and vegan burgers.

Busboys and Poets is located at 2021 14th St. NW. It’s open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Dine-in, pickup, and delivery are available.

Fans of hearty homemade soups will appreciate Soupergirl, a unique restaurant that specializes in making natural, healthy soups. Soupergirl’s soups are full of fresh locally sourced vegetables, grains, and beans, and leave out additives and preservatives. All of the soups on the menu are plant-based and prepared with natural seasonal ingredients.
