Ready to make this holiday season extra special? Woodbridge and the surrounding areas make it easy. From craft shows and ice skating to drive-thru light displays and horseback riding, you’re sure to find plenty of fun ways to celebrate the holidays this year.

Nights of Lights on the Fairgrounds

If you want to experience an enchanting evening the kids will love, make the short drive to Manassas for Nights of Lights on the Fairgrounds. Held annually at the Prince William County Fairground, Nights of Lights features a drive-thru light display filled with thousands of twinkling lights synced to popular holiday tunes. There’s also a Christmas village as well as several carnival rides to enjoy. At the Christmas village, you can purchase hot chocolate, complete a craft, or simply take some time to enjoy the holiday decor. When you’re done there, head over to the carnival rides and take a spin on the carousel or Ferris wheel.

Gates open at 6 p.m. and close at 10 p.m., seven nights a week from now through January 9. A ticket for the drive-thru light show is $25 for a single vehicle, while Christmas Village and carnival ride tickets are available for an additional fee. Purchase tickets online or at the gate.

Meadowlark’s Winter Walk of Lights

If you prefer to stroll through a light display rather than drive, visit the Winter Walk of Lights at the Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna. Every year, close to 80,000 people enjoy the holiday lights, which include several illuminated displays and a multitude of lighted trees. The walk is self-guided on a one-way, asphalt trail, and you’re welcome to move at your own pace. After you’ve completed the trail, warm up at the snack shop with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee.

The Walk of Lights is held from November 11 through January 2. From November 11 until December 9, hours are 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. with tickets available online for $16 and at the gate for $20. Starting December 10, gates open at 5 p.m. with tickets available online only for $18. Guests are required to reserve an entrance time when purchasing tickets to help prevent overcrowding.

Holiday Lights on Horseback

Looking for something out of the ordinary for this holiday season? Try the Holiday Lights on Horseback, held at Foxfire Farm in Brandywine, Maryland. The trail ride, which lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, meanders through the farm’s grounds amid a twinkling light display. No experience with horseback riding is necessary, and the tour is available for ages 10 and up. After your ride, relax by the bonfire and enjoy a beverage from the hot cocoa bar. Rides are held throughout the month of December, with online tickets starting at $60.

Ice & Lights – The Winter Village at Cameron Run

Every year, the water park at Cameron Run is transformed into Ice & Lights, a holiday celebration featuring light displays, an ice-skating rink, an elf scavenger hunt, and more. A snack shop, the Slice ‘n Ice, sells items such as coffee, hot chocolate, donut holes, pizza, and hot dogs. Due to capacity limits, tickets are only available online, with prices starting at $8. The village is open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. nightly, from November 19 through January 2, including holidays. Skate times last for one hour, and you must choose your entry time when you buy your ticket.

Old Town Christmas Market and Holiday Craft Show

Support your local artisans this year by doing your holiday shopping at the Old Town Christmas Market and Holiday Craft Show in Alexandria. You’ll find vendors selling everything from candles to baked goods to hand-crafted jewelry and more at the annual event. While you’re there, enjoy live entertainment, hot chocolate, and dessert in a festive, holiday atmosphere. It’s free to enter and held on December 11 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Holiday Evenings at Rippon Lodge

Experience what the holiday season was like years ago during Holiday Evenings at Rippon Lodge. The lodge’s interior and its grounds are both lavishly decorated for the season. Take your time observing the various exhibits displaying holiday decor from several different periods of American history. Holiday Evenings takes place throughout the month of December on various nights, so check the website for more information. Tickets are $10 per person, and children 6 and under are free. Reservations are recommended.

Santa Clause makes a special visit to the lodge on December 11 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 per child for this event, and adults are admitted free of charge. Parents are invited to take pictures of their children with Santa and are asked to pack snacks and their patience as this is always a popular event.

Christmas in a Civil War Camp

Have you ever wondered how Civil War soldiers celebrated the holidays? Find out at Christmas in a Civil War Camp, hosted at Bristoe Heritage Battlefield Heritage Park. Enjoy living history demonstrations as well as a visit from a Civil War Santa Clause. If you bring the kids, nineteenth-century era Christmas crafts are available for them to complete. The event takes place on December 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with one-hour tours beginning at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person, and children 6 and under are free. Advanced registration is recommended.
