From birthday cakes to buns and pastries ideal for accompanying your morning cup of coffee, Baltimore’s bakeries reflect a commitment to quality ingredients and a love for serving the community.

Charm City Cakes

Charm City Cakes owner Duff Goldman brought this tiny bakery into the culinary big leagues with a team of cake decorators who introduced the world to over-the-top cake creations. His reality cake decorating series, “Ace of Cakes,” was among the top-rated Food Network programs. Viewers tuned in to watch Goldman put his pastry skills to the test. Today, Charm City Cakes operates on both U.S. coasts; its Los Angeles location opened in 2011.

If you can conceive it, Charm City Cakes can achieve it. The bakery’s offerings include fully customizable cakes and predesigned cakes for weddings, birthdays, and other special occasions. Charm City Cakes offers cake designs to suit any budget, from miniature cakes in jars to elegant multilayered cakes.

Whether you’re a native Marylander or a Baltimorean at heart, you’ll love the B’More Pride cakes featuring the Ravens’ Purple Pride, How Bout Dem O’s Orioles-inspired cake, and a Natty Boh (National Bohemian) design. Local delivery via Grubhub and pickup options are available.

Harmony Bakery

If you’re searching for gluten-free, vegan baked goods in Baltimore, Harmony Bakery is the place to visit.

Don, Renee, and Lisa Gorman are the owners and operators of this jewel box of a bakery based in the Hampden neighborhood. Don and Renee spent years selling their healthy baked savory creations and sweet goods at the Waverly Farmers Market. Harmony Bakery is the bakery business they always wanted to create to share their love for fresh-baked goodness with the Baltimore community.

Harmony Bakery uses only the finest, freshest ingredients. The staff mixes all its flours from scratch to attain the ideal blend for its delicious cakes and cookies. An ever-changing menu allows the bakery team to take advantage of local, in-season ingredients that make their way into the bakery items.

Sit down with your morning cup of coffee with a homemade Harmony Bakery bagel or slice of bread. Cap off a dinner or special celebration with a taste-tempting strawberry sundae cupcake accented with chocolate, sprinkles, and a fresh strawberry slice. If you thought matcha was only for tea, you haven’t tasted the matcha doughnuts with their distinctive green hue.

Start your day on a healthy note with Don’s homemade granola. While flavors vary based on supply, some recent additions to the granola lineup have included goji berry, chocolate-covered pretzel and almond, and maple ginger.

Hoehn’s Bakery

The family-owned Hoehn’s Bakery is a staple business in Baltimore’s Highlandtown neighborhood. Founded in 1927 by William Hoehn, Hoehn’s Bakery takes pride in using fresh, preservative-free ingredients in all its baked goods. When he opened this Baltimore bakery, Hoehn installed a massive brick hearth oven in the business. Today, the Hoehn’s Bakery team still uses this original oven and family recipes that Hoehn brought with him from Germany.

Highlandtown residents adore Hoehn’s crullers and doughnuts. The offerings include Boston cream and glazed honey-dip doughnuts as well as chocolate and cinnamon crullers.

A sandwich isn’t a sandwich until you make it with Hoehn’s hearth oven-baked bread. You’ll taste the extraordinary freshness in the Vienna and rye breads baked daily.

Hoehn’s seasonal specialty bakery items offer items suited for holiday entertaining. During Lent, Hoehn’s bakes dozens of hot cross buns decorated with thick buttercream crosses on top. Bunny and lamb cakes are popular among customers at Easter.

When fresh fruit is in season during the spring and summer months, you can find fresh strawberry, peach, and blueberry cakes. Fall signals the arrival of apple dumplings, pumpkin cheesecake, and an assortment of pies for Thanksgiving dinner. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a slice of Hoehn’s old-fashioned stollen, a German bread containing candied fruits and nuts.

While Hoehn’s Bakery doesn’t deliver, you can request curbside pickup for your baked treats when placing your order.

Midnite Confections Cupcakery

Midnite Confections Cupcakery bakes up some of the best cupcakes in Charm City. A passion for baking fueled a mother-son partnership that launched this family-owned establishment in Baltimore’s Federal Hill neighborhood.

Midnite Confections Cupcakery offers a dozen cupcake flavors for purchase daily. Its signature cupcake varieties include the decadent Black Velvet, a derivation of velvet cupcakes containing a rich chocolate base and smooth cream cheese frosting. The namesake Midnite Cupcake is the ultimate cupcake indulgence: A chocolate-chip cream cheese filling fills the center of this decadent chocolate cupcake topped with a chocolate buttercream frosting.

In addition to its signature cupcake staples, Midnite Confections Cupcakery includes two lines of specialty cupcakes: After Hours cupcakes, which get a boost from the addition of flavored liqueurs in the cupcake batter, and StrangeLoves. The StrangeLoves cupcakes combine the best of two desserts into one. A great example of this is the Apple Caramel StrangeLove. A salted caramel buttercream frosting tops a moist vanilla cake containing an apple pie filling. The Brownie Brulee is another StrangLoves cupcake, blending a rich brownie base on the bottom with the crunch of creme brulee and a homemade vanilla buttercream frosting on top.

Cookie lovers won’t be disappointed here either. Midnite Confections Cupcakery offers seven cookie varieties, ranging from peanut butter and snickerdoodle cookies to a Black Velvet cookie with white chocolate chips.

Delivery for small orders is available via Grubhub and Postmates.

Location: 1051 S. Charles St.
