A cooking class can help you learn both basic cooking techniques and complex skills. Learning to cook can be a fun hobby and a way to make more healthy meals. The Fairfax, Virginia area offers many great cooking classes for you to explore your inner chef.

Chef Matt Finarelli

Chef Matt Finarelli offers a selection of culinary classes both in-person and online. Finarelli will come to your home, conduct a class, and assist in creating a gourmet meal. The minimum attendance for one of the classes is four adults. Some of Finarelli’s most popular in-person classes include “Better with Bourbon,” “French Mother Sauces,” “Handmade Pasta Made Easy,” and “Lunch on the Amalfi Coast.” Aside from meals, Finarelli also has expertise in cocktail making and provides cocktail courses, including “The Evolution of the Martini,” “The Modern Classics,” “Tiki Cocktails,” “Chef Matt’s Original Cocktails,” and “The Roaring 20’s.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Finarelli began offering online courses. The classes became popular enough that he continues to offer them. Usually, the live online courses last for one to two hours. Some of Finarelli’s more popular online courses include classic, seafood, or vegetarian paella, chicken marsala accompanied by classic Caesar salad, and herb-crusted lamb racks with arugula, grape and goat cheese salad.

Cooking Thyme With Stacie

Cooking Thyme with Stacie offers a variety of live-streaming cooking classes. Stacie Husmann spent three years in Paris and took cooking classes at L’Assiette de Paris. Her experience there inspired Cooking Thyme. Cooking Thyme features regular live-streamed cooking classes that last 60 to 90 minutes. After the live class, students can access a recording to review. Cooking Thyme also offers recordings on previous classes through its cooking class video library. The video library classes include a full video of the class and a downloadable preparation packet. You can watch the archived classes on your own schedule.

Sur La Table

Sur La Table has a wide selection of fun, themed classes, including “Table For Two,” a hands-on date night cooking class. Those wishing to spend a date night dabbling in their favorite cuisine can select from several different options, including “From Paris with Love,” “South American Steak Night,” and “Exploring Thai Flavors.” The classes are usually two hours long. Students work in groups of four. The “From Paris with Love” class has students cook pan-roasted chicken with fine herbs and whole-grain mustard sauce, brown butter mashed potatoes, salad verte, and French vanilla crème brûlée.

Sur La Table also offers specific baking courses such as “Great British Baking.” In the class, you learn to make Victoria sponge cake, sticky toffee pudding, and sausage rolls. Like the other courses, the baking classes are two to two-and-a-half hours long. Other baking courses include “French Baking: Brioche” and “Family Fun: Springtime Cupcakes.” Sur La Table has four different ways to take classes: in-person classes, online classes, private events, and the Sur La Table Culinary Institute.

Culinaria Cooking School

The Culinaria Cooking School has been a fixture in the Fairfax area since 2008. The school offers a variety of classes in the culinary arts. The school has courses for you whether you want to pursue a career, have a passion for cooking, or are simply looking for something fun to try. It uses a number of techniques for teaching students. In some classes, students watch a demonstration of a chef preparing a multi-course meal. The chef provides students with a step-by-step narration of the meal preparation while students sip wine, ask questions and learn.

A participation class at the Culinaria Cooking School begins with a demonstration. Students then complete the same meal while the instructor answers questions and provides advice. The classes are interactive and meant to teach students by having them take part as well. Class categories include baking, kids and teens, couples cooking, healthy cooking, regional and ethnic, and skills and techniques. The school offers private and corporate events.

Cookology

Cookology offers a wide selection of cooking classes, from fun date nights to a 6-week culinary boot camp. The boot camp series teaches basic cooking skills for novice chefs. The boot camp covers everything from knife skills to cooking techniques. Students learn to make dishes like beef bourguignon, coq au vin, and blackened pork. Cookology also offers numerous other classes for date nights, such as Rainbow Sushi with Mixology. The class teaches how to make complex sushi rolls and miso sauces. The class menu includes rainbow roll, dynamite roll, and sparkling elderflower sake cocktail.

Cookology also has an entire program dedicated to children, including cooking summer camps. Cookology’s options for kids begin with various camps for 5- to 7-year-olds. The campus usually includes a 2-hour workshop up to three days per week. Cookology also offers courses and camps for children aged 8 and older. Some other options include family classes where parents and children can learn together as a group.

Together We Cook

Together We Cook provides fun cooking classes for children. Mari Coelho began Together We Cook to “empower children to be confident in the kitchen.” Coelho attended cooking classes at the Escola Wilma Kövesi cooking school while working as a lawyer in Brazil. Eventually, she decided to share her passion for cooking and began Together We Cook. The class seeks to teach children about cooking and to inspire them to make good, healthy food choices. The classes split children into two age groups: 3- to 6-year-olds and 7- to 14-year-olds. Together We Cook offers courses like “Dinner Together” and “Dumplings from Scratch.” Together We Cook offers virtual classes for children and the whole family.
