The 2023 Hyundai Kona is a small, stylish SUV with a sleek profile and the capacity to fit four to five passengers. Available in the SE, SEL, N Line, Limited, and N trims, this vehicle has excellent driving dynamics with lively handling, minimum body roll, and impressive fuel economy. It also comes with the usual high-quality Hyundai technology and safety features that have received a top rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2023 Hyundai Kona’s Off-Roading Capabilities

SmartSense features, such as blind-spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, highway driving assist, and driver attention warning, make the 2023 Hyundai Kona a joy to drive in urban environments. If you want to take more adventurous drives, the vehicle can handle those to an extent. The vehicle has certain attributes that contribute to its off-roading capabilities.

High Ground Clearance

While the Hyundai Kona 2023 is not an off-roading vehicle, it comes with a ground clearance of 6.7 inches, so it can easily navigate most rough or poorly maintained roads. Its high ground clearance prevents the car undercarriage from scraping against the road surface and damaging the transmission, gas tank, and other parts that can be expensive to repair. Even so, it might be best to avoid roads with large rocks, overgrown vegetation, and deep ruts left by larger vehicles with higher ground clearance. You may also want to avoid driving over wet fields, through streams, and near lakes.

The Kona’s high ground clearance allows you to drive safely over ramps when entering or leaving parking areas. You won’t have any issues with the ramp slope damaging the car undercarriage when the vehicle has two wheels on it and two on the flat ground. The 2023 Hyundai Kona can also clear most curbs and road intersections.

Shorter Car Wheelbase

The 2023 Hyundai Kona has a short distance of 102 inches from the center of the front wheels to the center of the rear wheels. This shorter wheelbase makes the vehicle easier to maneuver on narrow country lanes and twisty roads and reduces the likelihood of the car getting stuck when off-roading. You may want to avoid rock crawling, however, as the shorter car wheelbase may increase the risk of undercarriage damage in such a situation.

All-Wheel Drive

All-wheel drive is available as an option on the 2023 Hyundai Kona SE, SEL, N Line, and Limited trims. This system works with the help of three differentials or gearboxes found in the car’s front, center, and rear areas. With these gearboxes, the all-wheel drive system can deliver power simultaneously to the front and rear wheels of the vehicle. Each of the vehicle’s four tires can get independent traction.

The system automatically adjusts the amount of power it sends to the wheels depending on the driving conditions. For example, the car sends more power to the rear wheels to maximize fuel efficiency when driving on regular roads. Meanwhile, the power distribution is more equitable to all four wheels when driving through rain or snow. Known as variable torque distribution, this technology allows the 2023 Hyundai Kona to avoid wheel spin and helps it get a better grip on rough roads in all kinds of weather conditions.

Skid Plate

The 2023 Hyundai Kona has a steel skid plate underneath it to protect the engine and transmission to prevent pebbles, rocks, and other debris from damaging it. If your car doesn’t already have a skid plate, you can ask your regular mechanic to mount one or fix one yourself. The protective cover is around two to three millimeters thick, and it’s affordable and easy to fasten to the car with bolts. If you intend to do a significant amount of off-roading with your 2023 Hyundai Kona, a skid plate is essential for protecting your vehicle.

However, it’s important to understand that a skid plate will not keep water out. So you might want to avoid driving through puddles and streams or rivers of unknown depths. The ruts or potholes in these places could damage your car suspension, and exposure to water could ruin your car components.

Energetic Powertrain

The 2023 Hyundai Kona’s base SE and SEL trims have an MPI-Atkinson 4-cylinder engine with 2.0 liters displacement, 147 horsepower at 6200 RPM, 132 Torque at 4500 RPM, 12.5:1 compression ratio, and a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) 16-valve DCVVT valve train. The N-Line and Limited trims have a Turbo-GDI 4-cylinder engine with 1.6 liters displacement, 195 horsepower at 6000 RPM, 195 Torque at 1500-4500 RPM, 10:1 compression ratio, and a DOHC 16-valve valve train. The Kona N has a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine with 276 horsepower.

While the SE and SEL trims are best suited for urban driving, you may have more enjoyable experiences off-roading with the N-Line and Limited trims. The Hyundai Kona N is speedy but may not perform well on rough roads.

All Terrain Tires

It’s advisable to install all-terrain tires on your 2023 Hyundai Kona if you intend to use the car for off-road drives. These tires have a unique tread design that can give the vehicle an excellent surface grip when maneuvering along dirt roads, rocky surfaces, and muddy trails. Good quality all-terrain tires are likely to last from three to five years, depending on your driving style, the condition of the surfaces you drive on, and how you maintain the vehicle. Tire treads will wear differently when driven on off-road surfaces than on paved roads.

Always check the tires before embarking on an off-roading adventure. If the tire treads appear worn, ask your tire technician to mount new ones before your trip.
